Life Skills and Life Skills Education

What is the importance of life skills education?

Taking all parts of a child’s personality into account can help them flourish ,this is why life-skill education is vital to everyone’s well-being. The overall personality of a child is taken into account when it comes to life skills education. It provides the bravery to tackle any challenge and the strength to deal with any predicament. Best results can be attained by incorporating life skills education into the school curriculum.

What are life skills and life skills education?

Several definitions exist for life skills, including:

Life skills are abilities that allow people to engage in adaptive and positive behavior, allowing them to deal with the events and challenges of daily life, as well as participate in a modern world full of new challenges, and handle everything from interpersonal interactions to identifying and processing emotions.

This is accomplished by encouraging positive personal behaviors, social adaptation, citizenship, and positive work attitudes. The value of having life skills in one’s life resides in one’s ability to adapt to any situation and flourish in society’s renaissance and prosperity. The shortage of funding is one of the most pressing issues that needs immediate attention and answers these days.

According to UNICEF, life-skills education is “a behavior change or behavior development method to address a balance of three areas: knowledge, attitude, and skills.”

Life skills education helps students gain confidence in communication as well as cooperative and collaborative skills, as well as provides them with development tools, new ways of thinking and problem-solving, and methods for socializing, making new friends, and recognising the impact of their actions and behaviors. Students can use life skills to take action in situations where their parents or teachers are unavailable, and to make themselves take responsibility for their actions rather than blaming others.

The Importance of Life Skills

We must recognise the importance of life skills if we are to live a successful life. Skills play a critical role in our day to day lives. Life skills enable us to understand how to make our lives easier and simpler, how to live a pleasant life, and how to use our time wisely. These sharpen the ability to adapt to a variety of situations and prosper in all aspects of our lives.  Skills are crucial not only in personal lives but also professional lives and careers.

Individual -centric advantages:

In everyday life, students benefit from life skills education by being able to:

  • Find fresh ways to think about and solve problems.
  • Recognize the repercussions of their actions and encourage them to accept responsibility for their actions rather than placing blame on others.
  • Develop confidence in speaking abilities as well as collaboration and teamwork.
  • Outside of the classroom, kids analyze possibilities, make judgments, and comprehend why they make specific choices.
  • Develop a stronger feeling of self-awareness and gratitude for others.

“The ability and willingness to learn is the most important life skill.”

Skills are not only learnt in classrooms or as part of education systems, these are even inherited from one generation to the next. The advancement in Science and technology is adding benefits to our lives but is also creating more generation gap and hence transfer of skills is being limited. While adults are expected to ensure that their next generations learn from life skills education, they must not burden the kids with their own beliefs and principles. They must rather create opportunities for the kids where they get to problem solve.

Life skill education contributes to creating Life Long Learners!!
